Don’t know anything about a Garmin map? Going to download a map file on GpsMap.US?

Here some tips for newbies- I know it’s long and you will need time to read it, but it will take longer to try to understand how to do things by posting in threads or sending pms and waiting for a reply . Believe me

This guide is split into parts, depending on file(s) you have to download on forum, so look at your file extension and check the relative guide —

First :Garmin maps can be installed on every Garmin device or on devices running a Garmin application. (Maps functionality can change from device to device: Note -Some old devices and phones cant see a map greater than 2Gb)
Blackberry and “on demand” Street Pilot Iphone application can’t install additional maps, they require an internet connection to work. Blackberry program includes some regions maps and will work just with the embedded ones, Iphone will download maps online on demand.

Files download :

Compressed files:.rar .zip .part1 .part2 etc :

Usually files are rar files , that means they’re compressed files- To decompress them use WINRAR(shareware, but it will work with a popup even after expiring date)-

or 7zip (free)

Rar files ,if big ,can be uploaded split in more than one part, in this case download them all into the same folder, (you’ll see part one, part two etc) and, once you’ve installed the decompressing program, just click part 1 only – Winrar will decompress your part files in just one file-
Make sure all file names match. (in 7Zip case: *.7z.001 , *.7z.002 , *.7z.003 …)
Right click the first file (*.7z.001) and you will see the 7 Zip menu, enter that menu. you will see the “Extract files” and “Extract here” options.

Host sites links downloads?

How to Download Files from Filefactory, Uploaded, Netload or other host websitesas a Non-Premium User ?
Open the host file link. On the screen you will see two options. Free User(or slow download) and a Premium User(or fast download) . You need to click on the Free User button (or slow):
there will be a timer count down. As soon as the timer count down will reach ZERO. It will show you the download button
Now simply click on the Download Button and Download your file.
In some cases you’ll have to type in some Captcha letters or numbers-
We try to upload files on hosts like Zippyshare,1fichier : some offer fast multi download instances or accept big files. we encourage uploaders to use them.
Don’t click on ads, better to use Firefox or Chrome and install adblock plugin.

If the Host is not visible in your country use

Download Jdownloader, install it
use “Custom Install’: don’t install advertising software embedded in the default installer,
put your dlc file in it and it will download all the files in a comfortable way

It must be an .exe file or .msi file –
Install Basecamp latest version here:

patch it with
BaseCamp and MapInstall universal patcher

Or if you prefer Mapsource ( now it’s discontinued so better to use Basecamp with new City Navigators and topo maps)

Have you downloaded a Gmap folder ?

copy it in:
(in XP – C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataGARMINMaps) or
(in Vista, Windows 7/8 – C:ProgramDataGarminMaps)
(in MAC OS
/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Maps/)
You’ll have your map in Mapsource or Basecamp/MapInstall.
To unlock use:
Garmin gmap and family maps (Mapsource) unlocker
or
UnLock MapSource Directory
or
Protected Garmin File Toolkit v.2.2.5.4

Have you downloaded an IMG ?

IMGs are Garmin maps images, you can put them directly in your gps , or better in sd-
No problem with maps in sd, if something goes wrong , you can remove the sd and delete the map using your pc-

How to unlock your img?
Two methods: creating the sw.unl file
1 ) Unlocking an IMG creating the unl file – post N°193–
but this method wont work with .IMGs with FID greater than 2200 in new devices or in new firmwares devices,coz you’d need also the related .gma file to have the map authenticated.

so you should unlock
2 ) with an unlocker:
Garmin Image Unlock gimgunlock up to v.0.03+MapSigPatch
fastest in the world and works on Linux and Mac too
or
Fast IMG Unlocker v.2.1 update 12-4-2011 but it’s slower and it cant unlock maps in newer devices with firmware looking for map signature

How to see an img in Mapsource ?

but you wont have address search after transferring imgs in your gps-

How to see a Bluechart .img in Homeport on your pc or in your gps ?

Copy it in a Garmin folder in an sd , renaming it gmapsupp.img
